UNIOR - Among the first to use trivalent chromium on hand tools: a sustainable innovation that impresses

published: News, For Media

Unior has always strived for excellence, sustainability and environmental responsibility. After much research and testing, we have achieved an industry breakthrough - by introducing trivalent chrome on our spanners, pliers, puller and other hand tools. Unior was one of the first hand tool manufacturers to introduce trivalent chrome, which offers superior corrosion protection, is environmentally friendly and safer for users and workers. Trivalent chrome replaces the more toxic hexavalent chrome and offers greater resistance to corrosion, moisture and abrasion, while requiring less energy to produce. This innovation reinforces Unior's commitment to sustainable production and high quality, and the new electroplating continues to set standards in the hand tool industry.

Why did we choose trivalent chrome?

While hexavalent chromium offers good corrosion protection, it is toxic and harmful to the environment. Years of research together with institutes abroad have borne great result.  Our decision to use trivalent chromium is based on its outstanding properties:

- Superior corrosion protection: trivalent chromium offers better corrosion resistance than traditional hexavalent chromium, especially in combination with advanced nickel coatings, after long-term tests.

- Safe for the user and the environment: trivalent chromium is significantly less toxic. This means a safer working environment for our workers and greater safety for Unior tool users.

- Excellent resistance to moisture and abrasion: our tools with tri-valent chromium plating have passed rigorous salt chamber resistance tests (SIST EN ISO 9227:2017) and have shown superior durability even in the most demanding conditions where they are exposed to moisture and abrasion.

- Energy efficiency: The tri-valent chromium deposition process requires lower temperatures and lower energy consumption, which contributes to lower CO2 emissions.

An investment in the future: The new electroplating process

The investment in a new electroplating process is part of Unior's proactive approach to replace hexavalent chromium with trivalent chromium, in compliance with REACH. The new technology enables the precise and consistent application of trivalent chromium, ensuring superior protection for our tools. This step towards sustainable production strengthens our competitiveness and ensures high product quality.  This is a development decision that certainly represents a step forward in offering a more ecologically responsible and user-friendly range of products.

Sustainability and quality without compromise

Our decision to use trivalent chromium combines environmental care with a commitment to top quality. Unior tools offer reliability and durability and are now even more sustainable. This innovation offers superior protection against corrosion and wear while respecting high environmental standards.

Unior - The hand tool of the future. For your planet and ours with a great user experience.

At Unior, we are proud to be among the first hand tool manufacturers to switch to trivalent chrome technology. This reflects our commitment to sustainable manufacturing, which means we offer our customers not only superior products, but also a responsible future. With our new electroplating and our focus on innovation, we are setting standards in the industry. The future of hand tools is here, and Unior is leading the way with a combination of quality, sustainability and responsibility towards the environment and people.
